~T.E.E.N. - Teen Equine Experiential kNowledge~

Equine ExperientialSM helps teens ages 12-17 who are struggling with self-esteem, social problems, behavioral issues, relationships or feelings of inadequacy. Individual participants will learn how to care for horses while spending time one on one with a professional equine coach & certified educational instructor with nearly 20 years of classroom experience with at-risk students.  The lessons are flexible allowing the time to best serve the needs of the individual adolescent.

Equine Experiential'sSM TEEN program uses horses in a learning-centered experiential education process. This innovative approach is used to assist children and adolescents in learning about themselves, developing tools and strategies for making good choices, facilitating new insights and awareness, developing problem-solving skills, communicating more effectively, and improving confidence. TEEN will also help teenagers improve relationships and interpersonal skills, build leadership skills, and create collaborative environments.

With horses, teens learn experientially and are forced to move beyond their normal defense mechanisms. They begin to "see" the problems mirrored back to them and learn by responding to the horses. The experience forces teens to be authentic because they can’t fake it with a 1,200-pound teacher whose survival is dependant on being "tuned in".

Participants begin to:

• Maintain personal boundaries
• Learn to resolve conflicts
• Bond with family
• Build character strength
• Create healthy relationships
• Learn responsibility for personal decisions
• Learn from others
• Recognize unhealthy patterns of behavior
• Exercise assertiveness

TEEN workshop

This important time in a teen's life requires guidance, encouragement support and insight. Now is the opportunity to begin to shape an adolescents future. This program is designed to coach a youth through life’s trials and offer them a chance to bond with a horse. The power of horses to heal and teach goes beyond the understanding of professionals in the therapy world. This experiential program offers teens an opportunity to learn life-skills through "ah ha" moments when personal and group discoveries are made, learning happens and lives change. One article by BBC news talks about problem teenagers being taught to be horse whisperers and their experience with equine experiential learning.

Equine ExperientialSM also offers Florida Sunshine State aligned "Leadership Skills" and "Exploratory & Experiential Education" courses. Our programs apply the following principles from the Association for Experiential Education (www.aee.org):

• Experiences are structured to require the client to take initiative, make decisions and be accountable for their results.
• Throughout the experiential learning process, the client is actively engaged in posing questions, investigating, experimenting, being curious, solving problems, assuming responsibility, being creative and constructing meaning.
• Clients are engaged intellectually, emotionally, socially, spiritually and physically. This involvement produces an authentic learning experience.
• The results of the learning are personal and form the basis for positive future experience and learning.
• Relationships are developed and nurtured: client to self; client to horses; client to others and client to the world around them.
• The client may experience success, failure, adventure, risk-taking, and uncertainty because the outcomes of the experience cannot totally be predicted.
• Opportunities are nurtured to explore and examine personal values.
• The facilitator’s primary role includes setting suitable experiences, posing problems, setting boundaries, supporting clients, ensuring physical and emotional safety, and facilitating the learning process.
• The facilitator recognizes and encourages spontaneous opportunities for learning.
• The design for the learning experience includes the possibility to learn from natural consequences, mistakes and successes.
